ASSP Hands Out Inaugural PtD Award



Following time as a senior safety engineer at Tesla solar panel manufacturing plant in Buffalo, New York, Keith W. Pillich joined Amherst’s Vlado Engineering as an environmental health and safety (EHS) specialist and manager. Over the course of nearly 6 years in this position, Keith W. Pillich has managed a variety of EHS processes around the world. Keith Walter Pillich has also established himself as a member of professional organizations such as the American Society of Safety Professionals.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) recently collaborated with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the National Safety Council (NSC) to create the Prevention through Design (PtD) Award. The award, which can be distributed to individuals, businesses, and other groups, is used to recognize significant contributions to safety knowledge, with a focus on unique, innovative methods of designing-out hazards and preventing illness or injury.

The inaugural PtD Award was given to Fred A. Manuele, an experienced occupational safety and health professional who has made countless contributions to the field of design safety. Manuele has been so influential, in fact, that ASSP gathered a number of his professional papers and published the collection as a book titled Fred Manuele on Safety Management: A Collection from Professional Safety. He has authored a number of his own textbooks, all of which feature sections on the importance of designing-out hazards and the most effective methods of doing so.

Annual Safety Conference and Expo

Keith W. Pillich has worked as a safety officer in various capacities. Based in Buffalo, Keith Walter Pillich is a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).

The ASSP is one of the organizations that exist for EHS and OSH professionals. The organization was founded in 1911, and today has about 37,000 OSH professionals as members. The organization is committed to advancing members’ careers and safety in the workplace. One of its goals is to increase the knowledge of OSH professionals through education.

ASSP conducts the Annual Safety Conference and Expo as one of the means of upholding its values and achieving its goals. Primarily the conference is held for educational purposes as the best minds in the OSH industry are usually present to teach courses and give lectures. In addition, the Annual Safety Conference and Expo also fosters networking. Safety professionals meet one another and build a network, consequently advancing their careers.

What Causes Cerebral Palsy?


Keith W. Pillich is a safety professional. During Keith W. (Walter) Pillich’s leisure time, he volunteers to help people living with cerebral palsy in the Buffalo, New York, area.

Cerebral palsy is a disorder or group of disorders that affect a person’s mobility and ability to maintain balance. The word “cerebral” denotes that it involves the brain. “Palsy” refers to weakness or problems moving a muscle.

Unusual brain development or brain damage while a child is forming causes cerebral palsy. Since this happens before the child is born, prevention is not feasible. However, cerebral palsy can occur after birth. The cause of cerebral palsy after birth is not known, but possible causes include gene mutations, maternal infections, head injuries, brain infections, intracranial hemorrhage, and asphyxia neonatorum. Asphyxia neonatorum is a medical condition that occurs in babies if they do not get enough oxygen during their birth.

There are not many options for preventing cerebral palsy. But to make the illness bearable, patients can use assistive aids such as walking aids, hearing aids, and wheelchairs. Treatment methods include medications such as diazepam and baclofen, and doctors sometimes use orthopedic surgery and selective dorsal rhizotomy to treat cerebral palsy.

How EHS Provides Safety for People

EHS stands for Environment, Health, and Safety, a system to ensure that workers are safe from harm. EHS provides safety in the workplace by enforcing laws. In the United States the Occupational Safety and Health Act contains stipulations for safety in the workplace, and EHS departments ensure that companies enforce these laws.

Different companies have different EHS policies. An EHS policy is a set of standardized environmental, health, and safety rules developed by an organization for itself. Note that these rules are specific to companies and are based on the generally accepted EHS laws. EHS policies are even more advantageous to workplace safety because they are based on the specifics of a company. For instance, the EHS that applies to a software development company does not apply verbatim to a smartwatch-producing company.
